Description
"The UNESCO Nubian Compaign and excavations in Faras lasted from 1961 to 1964. The accomplishment of these, the race against time and the enormous difficulties experienced in the performance of this task, are unparalleled. These were all surmounted thanks to the late Professor K. Michalowski. In Faras, not only superb wall paintings, unique architectural elements and antique writings were discovered and conserved, but thanks to the complex works of various specialists, it was also possible to preserve some of the unique materials now forming a basis for the elaboration of Nubian history. Separate but no less important parts of this material are the skeletal remains and graves of the bishops of Faras. These, to a far greater extent than was initially assumed, permit the supplementation and enriching of this history. A most important element of these investigations is the objective confirmation of the data obtained from the wall paintings and the inscriptions. A comparison made between some of the bishops' portraits and the skeletal material, found in their graves, provided irrefutable evidence attesting that the portraits are those of actual historical personages. The age of the deceased estimated on the basis of the bones confirms the veracity of the inscriptions on the funerary stelae. A detailed investigation of the skeletal materials presented in this monograph, has thrown an entirely new light on the problem of the origin and selection of the individual heads of the Faras archdiocese, and on the entirety of the Church hierarchy of that time. " Of the 28 bishops of Faras included on the List in the Cathedral of Pachoras-Faras, and the later five (not on the List), the author examined the skeletons of ten. He furthermore performed an anthropological analysis based on the portraits of three bishops: Kyros, Marianos and Mercurios. - from Amzon
